Of late there has been some original scripts and films created in Bollywood and quite a few of them have done well. But Bollywood has always been known to have plagiarized scripts and stories from Hollywood and film industries in other parts of the world.
Bollywood movies copied from Hollywood films
- Agneepath of 1990: The basic story and the legendary character portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan are loosely based on another famous Hollywood movie ‘Scarface’ which stars Al Pacino in an iconic character. Both the movies are about a protagonist who uses every tactic, legal or illegal, and fights his way out of poverty to rise to the top and become an affluent and dreaded gangster or mafia don.
- Aitraaz of 2004: This Bollywood movie starring Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, and Kareena Kapoor is inspired from Hollywood erotic thriller ‘Disclosure’ which featured Demi Moore and Michael Douglas in lead roles. The movies are about sexual harassment at offices.
- Dil Hai ki Manta Nahi of 1991: This Aamir Khan starrer was a scene by scene copy of the 1934 American movie It happened one Night. The Mahesh Bhatt directed movie was a super hit. If you watch each of the movies one after the other, you will hardly find any difference in story or treatment.
- Baazigar of 1993: The basic plot of the movie is borrowed from the Hollywood flick A Kiss Before Dying. The story of the both the 2 films is centered around the main protagonist/character getting his revenge against a billionaire enemy by getting into relationships with his daughters. Baazigar was the first big solo hit of Shah Rukh Khan.
- Murder of 2004: This erotic thriller was kind of a breakthrough movie in Indian cinema. It launched the careers of starring Mallika Sherawat and kissing hero Emran Hashmi. The Bollywood movie was however copied from Richard Gere-starring American film Unfaithful. The story is about a couple who have extreme marital problems after the wife has a torrid affair.
- Pyar To Hona Hi Tha of 1998: This Ajay Devgn and Kajol starrer was a direct lift from Hollywood flick French Kiss which had Meg Ryan as the main lead. The story is about a woman who goes to another country to accost her straying fiancé but lands up in trouble after a crook seated near her on the plane charms and cheats her into smuggling.
- Munnabhai MBBS of 2003: This Bollywood movie was a big hit and re-launched the career of Sanjay Dutt. The story is loosely based on the Hollywood flick Patch Adams which had Robin Williams as the main lead. In both films, the protagonist is a crook who gains admission into med school with the help of his cronies and then uses unique ways to cure patients.
- Partner of 2007: This Bollywood movie was copied from Will Smith starrer ‘Hitch.’ In Partner, Salman Khan plays the role of a sentimental but intelligent consultant who teaches men, like Govinda’s character, on how to date the women whom they love but don’t have confidence to take the first step.
- Chachi 420 of 1997: The Kamal Hassan starrer was copied from Hollywood flick Mrs. Doubtfire, which had the effervescent Robin Williams in the lead role. The story of both the films is about a divorced man and professional actor who gains entry to his ex’s house in the disguise of a female housekeeper so as to be able to spend time with his children.
- Awaara Pagal Dewaana of 2002: This comedy-crime caper copied its story from the Hollywood movie ‘The Whole Nine Yards’ which also had an ensemble cast featuring Bruce Willis, etc.
- Abhimaan of 1973: It is rumored that the story of this Amitabh Bachchan starrer was based on real life events. However, the movie is also similar to the storyline of 1954 Hollywood film A Star Is Born. The story is about a well-known singer who asks his wife to enter the industry, but when she becomes more popular, it hurts his ego.
- Ghulam of 1998: This movie starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji was famous for the song ‘Aati Kya Khandala.’ Its story is based on the 1954 Hollywood movie On the Waterfront. Another Bollywood movie which lifted its story from ‘On the Waterfront’ is Sanjay Dutt starrer Kabzaa.
- Yeh Dillagi of 1994: This Bollywood movie featured Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan as brothers and Kajol as the female lead. It was copied from the 1954 American movie ‘Sabrina’. The story is about a woman who returns home as a high fashion model and falls in love with the businessman elder brother even though she like the Casanova younger brother before.
- Baghban of 2003: The story of this Bollywood flick was copied from American movie ‘Make Way For Tomorrow’ which released in 1937. The storyline is about an elderly couple who after losing their home are forced to part ways because none of their children are ready to offer shelter to both of them at the same time.
- Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar of 1992: This Aamir Khan starrer was a cult hit with the youth. The story is loosely based on the Hollywood flick ‘Breaking Away’ which released in 1979.
- Judwaa of 1997: This Bollywood movie is copied from the 1992 film Twin Dragons. The plot is about two identical brothers who get separated after birth. One brother stays with his parents while the other becomes a goon.
- Mohabbatein of 2000: This Bollywood flick had an ensemble cast which included Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. The movie was inspired from the cult classic Robin Williams starrer Dead Poets Society.
- Rock On of 2008: The Bollywood movie which had Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, and others was loosely based on ‘The Happy Life’ a movie from South Korea. The crux of the plot is a rock band reunion after it disbanded many years ago.
