Swara Bhaskar is an Indian movie actress who primarily works in the Indian Hindi film industry. She became famous after playing the roles of Kangana Ranaut’s best friend ‘Payal’ in the super hit movie, Tanu Weds Manu,’ a role replayed by her in the recent 100-crore hit sequel ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns.’ She became even more popular after her role in the Dhanush-Sonam starrer ‘Raanjhanaa.’ Swara’s acting was critically acclaimed in all these movies and she even got Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress nominations for her roles.
Her next acting venture is the Sooraj Barjatya directed Salman Khan starrer ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.’

Early life and Family background
Bhaskar was born on April 9 1987 in Delhi to Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar, a Telugu Naval officer and Ira Bhaskar, a Bihari who worked as a professor of cinema studies at Delhi’s JNU or Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her maternal grandmother hails from Varanasi.
Swara attended the Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Delhi and later completed her graduation in English literature from Miranda House of Delhi University. Another well-known actress from the Hindi film industry, Minisha Lamba, was her classmate. Bhaskar then went to JNU to complete her post graduate masters in Sociology.
Swara has stated that even though she was from a conservative middle class family, her parents were supportive of her in all her decisions and career moves. They not only inculcated the right values but were also instrumental in making sure that she got the right kind of education. She credits the support and values of her family to her current success as an actress. Bhaskar shares a great rapport with her extended family. The 5’5″ tall actress does miss her family when she is away shooting for her movies, particularly during dinner.

Career and Success Story
Swara always wanted to be an actress. So after complete her masters, she had a ‘now or never’ moment and delved head onto into acting. Initially she worked with the ‘Act One’ theater group of N. K. Sharma in Delhi. Later, she moved to Mumbai and finally started acting in films in 2009 with the movie ‘Madholal Keep Walking.’
Bhaskar finally found fame and critical acclaim after she played the role of Payal in the movie ‘Tanu Weds Manu.’ For her performance she won the Zee Cine Awards -Best Supporting Actress award and garnered many acting nominations.
In 2013, she played the main role in the movie ‘Listen… Amaya’ which also saw the reunion of actors Deepti Naval and Farooq Sheikhafter a gap of 28 years. The same year she enacted the role of Bindiya in the movie Raanjhanaa. It brought her more popularity, fame, and critical acclaim. She also acted in ‘X – The Film,’ an Indian experimental movie that was directed by 11 filmmakers. In 2014, she hosted a TV series called Samvidhaan.
In April 2015, she went to Lahore, Pakistan and appeared as a guest in Mazaaq Raat, a comedy show on Pakistan TV. It was telecast on April 27, 2015. She acted as a teenager’s mother in the movie ‘Nil Battey Sannata’ directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. For her role in this movie, she received the Best Actress award in September 2015 at the Silk Road International Film Festival.
Bhaskar’s upcoming movies include Debaloy De directed ‘Machhli Jal Ki Rani Hai,’ Anirudhh Chawla directed ‘Sabki Bajegi Band,’ and ‘Mango’ directed by Abbas Tyrewala and produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment. Swara plays the role of sister of Salman’s character in this movie directed by Sooraj Barjatya. It is the second time after 2007’s Saawariya that Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor will be seen together on a movie screen. Other actors in the movie include Neil Nitin Mukesh, Anupam Kher, and Deepak Dobriyal.
Bhaskar has stated that she was simply awed by the brilliant narration of the film by Sooraj Barjatya and hence decided to do the movie for the iconic Rajshri banner. Also, she knew that her role was not only meaty but also demanded a strong performance out of her. The icing on the cake, for her, was the opportunity to be able to work with Salman Khan. She is a big fan of the superstar and grew up watching his movies; working with Salman in a movie was like a dream come true for Swara.
Bhaskar has praised Salman as a co-star and lauded him as an energetic and jovial person. She also liked working with him because he kept everyone happy on the sets and was very generous. Lunches with him was like darbar! Professionally, Bhaskar learnt the art of improvisation from Salman and continues to do so.
