Ayushmann Khurrana established himself as the ‘Bollywood Star’ of 2018, after he proved his worth in surprise hit movies like ‘Badhaai ho’ and ‘Andhadhun’. If you look at his filmography, he has always tried to be different from the rest of the crowd, by choosing movies that have different themes and content.
Vicky Donor dealt with sperm donation, Dum Laga ke Haisha dealt with a man marrying a rather overweight girl, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan dealt with the man coming to terms with his erectile dysfunction and Badhai Ho was all about a middle-aged couple who get pregnant much to the disappointment of their adult son. Even Andhadhun had him playing a role of a blind pianist.
So what are the upcoming movies for Ayushmann Khurrana? Is he still choosing his scripts judiciously? Will he still go for offbeat roles? The answer is Yes.
First up is Bala, a movie made on a premature, balding man. The shooting for the movie, begins March 2019. Khurrana has even voiced that he will go bald for the part, because according to him physical transformation is necessary, for any character that is to be played on screen.
Bala will also have Bhumi Pednekar cast opposite him, she will play the role of a dusky girl. In a movie that seems to be challenging social norms, like the on-screen pair did with Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Shubh Mangal Savdhan, Khurrana will also be piling kilos to look overweight for his role. The movie is directed by Amar Kaushik, who directed the horror hit Stree in 2018.
Another upcoming movie that Ayushmann Khurrana is a part of, is Dream Girl. This movie is directed by Raaj Shandilyaa who directed Freaky Ali and Welcome Back. The movie is produced by Ekta Kapoor under the banner of Balaji Motion Pictures. In this movie, he will be cast opposite Nusrat Bharucha.
In the movie ‘Dream Girl’, Ayushmann will sport 3 different looks and three different accents -, Hindi, Haryanvi and Braj Bhasha (Mathura style of Hindi. And yes, he is playing a woman in the film. In his words, “For me playing a woman is not just about the physicality. You have to think like a woman, you have to understand her perspective. You have to be empathetic, considerate and compassionate.” ‘Dream Girl’ is to be released by the end of 2019.
Ayushmann believes that 2019 will be content-driven. He says that stories, not stars will dictate the fate of movies in 2019. He says, “Stars are no longer stars, but content creators. You cannot be sure that a certain kind of film will work. Ultimately, it all boils down to entertainment.” He says that he reacts to stories as a layman would.” So, what do you think of Ayushmann Khurrana? Will he become an even bigger star in 2019?
