Sahabzade Irrfan Ali Khan, or Irrfan Khan, is an Indian TV and film actor who mainly works in the Indian film industry. Khan has also worked in some of the most commercially and critically successful Hollywood and British movies.
Khan won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his work in the Bollywood movie ‘Paan Singh Tomar.’ In 2011, the Government of India honored him with the 4th highest civilian award, i.e., the Padma Shri.He was recently appointed by state government of Rajasthan as its brand ambassador for its campaign ‘Resurgent Rajasthan.’

Early Life and Family
Irrfan was born on January 7 1967 into a Muslim family in Jaipur, Rajasthan to tyre-business owner late Jagirdar and Begum who belonged to the Tonk Hakim family. He has 2 brothers and a sister. In 1984, during his MA studies, Khan got a scholarship to the New Delhi-based NSD/National School of Drama. He finished his 3 years diploma from NSD and came to Mumbai for a career in acting.

Career
Khan struggled a lot during the initial days of his acting career to make a mark. He stayed afloat by working in theatre and in varied TV serials like Chandrakanta,Banegi Apni Baat, and Chanakya, etc.His film acting debut came in 1988 with the Mira Nair directed movie Salaam Bombay. He had a minor role in the film. Irrfan then did films like ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut’ and ‘Such a Long Journey’ which went unnoticed.
Khan’s luck changed in 2001 after directorAsif Kapadia offered him the lead role in the movie ‘The Warrior.’ In 2005, he played his first lead role in a Bollywood movie called ‘Rog.’ It was a commercial and critical failure.He got a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award in 2007 for his role in the movie ‘Metro.’ Since then, he has acted in many Bollywood movies like Maqbool, The Namesake, Haasil, New York, Talvar, The Lunchbox, Gunday, and Piku, Jazbaa, etc. as well as Hollywood films and blockbusters like the Slumdog Millionaire, Jurassic World, Life of Pi, The Darjeeling Limited, The Amazing Spider-Man, and A Mighty Heart.

Khan will be seen alongside Tom Hanks in the Ron Howard-directed movie Dan Brown’s ‘The Inferno,’ as well as opposite the Iranian star Golshifteh Farahani in ‘The Song Of Scorpions.’ Irrfan became a producer with the to-be-released movie ‘Kaash.’
