Heartthrob Shahid Kapoor had two movie releases in 2018, the period epic drama ‘Padmaavat’ and the social drama ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’.
Kapoor played the role of Rajput King Rawal Ratan Singh in Padmaavat. Deepika Padukone essayed the role of his wife, the breathtakingly beautiful Rani Padmavati. Ranveer Singh was cast in the antagonist’s role as Sultan Allaudin Khilji. Sanjay Leela Bhansali was the director and producer, while Viacom was the co-producer. The film released in theaters on Jan 25, 2018 to mixed reviews from critics. The audience however filled the theaters and set the cash registers ringing at the box office. The worldwide collections of Padmaavat totaled to over INR 580 crores making it the biggest hit of Shahid’s career. Even though Kapoor was the hero in the movie, all the accolades however were accorded to the performances of Ranveer and Deepika.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu featured Shraddha Kapoor as the female lead opposite Shahid. Other cast members were Yami Gautam and Divyendu Sharma. The movie’s story revolved around inflated electricity bills and how the one-man army Kapoor fought that mafia. Shooting commenced in Feb 2018 and finished in July 2018. The film released in theaters on Sep 21, 2018 to mixed response from both critics and viewers. It was a dud at the box office.
The upcoming film projects of Shahid include the remake of 2017 Telugu hit movie Arjun Reddy titled Kabir Singh and an untitled film of Raja Krishna Menon.
- Kabir Singh is being directed by Sandeep Vanga and co-produced by T-Series and Cine1 Studios. The female lead in the film is Kiara Advani. As was the story in the Telugu movie, Kabir Singh also tells the story of an alcoholic surgeon who unravels onto a path of self-destruction after his ex-lovers marriage to someone else. Shooting for the film commenced in Oct 2018 and it is set to release in theaters on June 21, 2019.
- Kapoor has committed to play the role of a boxer in the next untitled movie of Raja Krishna Menon. As per reports, Shahid will undergo training for a period of 3 months to prep for the role.
It is rumored that Kapoor may also feature in the below listed Hindi movies.
- Remake of 1964-Woh Kaun Thi: It is already known that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is set to star as the female lead in the remake of Woh Kaun Thi produced by KriArj Entertainment. As per rumors, Kapoor may join the cast as the male lead.
- Remake of Telugu blockbuster Magadheera: Shahid Kapoor and Pooja Hedge may star in this remake of Magadheera. Krish, the director of Gabbar Is Back, may direct the film. However, no formal announcement has been made to this effect.
- Untitled film by Imtiaz Ali: Shahid may once again work with his Jab We Met director in Imtiaz’s next directorial venture. The movie will be a romantic comedy.
